How to get a real-time stock quote using Google API

January 5th, 2009 | 11 Comments | Tagged as , , , ,

After resolving the problem with authentication, I continued playing around with Google Finance API, using HTTP and XML. The API offers some nice functionality to retrieve user portfolio content, but it doesn’t take long to realize that there is no support for retrieving (real-time) stock quotes, probably for some good reason like licensing. Can this fact get us closer to retrieving real-time stock quotes using Google Data API?

Troubleshooting 401 with GoogleLogin Authorization header

December 29th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Tagged as , ,

I was writing a small script to retrieve some data from Google Finance using the relevant Google Data API. I’m writing a stand-alone, desktop application and have therefore used the ClientLogin username and password authentication. The login worked fine, I was receiving HTTP status 200 and the appropriate response with the authentication token. Yet any subsequent attempt to use the Data API (to insance to retrieve the portfolio data) failed with HTTP 401 Token Invalid error.

NSLU2 and WD My Book Premium Edition 500 GBIt doesn’t need to be emphasized more that to read http://www.nslu2-linux.org/ is a complete must for everyone who would like to experiment with updating the original Linksys firmware of a NSLU2 device. Especially, the community rules and and the (extensive) set of warnings should be read and understood before descending into countless Howto’s. I’m grateful to all folks who contributed with all the information – following the steps and Howto’s I unslung my NSLU2 with Unslung-6.8-beta-firmware without problems. I usually perform a clean install when updating Linux at home, this time however, I decided to let Anaconda (the Fedora installer) to do the job. I was very pleased with the overall result with one exception: the installer forced me to manually modify my /etc/fstab, refusing to continue otherwise.
